Retraction Policy
Commitment to Ethical Publishing
The Journal of Gender Justice, Sexuality, and Health is committed to ensuring that all the research we publish maintains the highest standards of academic integrity. As part of our ethical publishing practices, we follow a retraction policy to address instances where a published article is found to contain significant errors or ethical violations that compromise the validity of the research.
Retraction is a serious step and is only taken when necessary to correct the scholarly record, protect readers, and uphold the integrity of the journal. The retraction process is conducted with transparency, fairness, and in accordance with guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Grounds for Retraction
An article may be considered for retraction if one or more of the following conditions are met:
- Plagiarism or Unauthorized Use of Another’s Work
If plagiarism is discovered, either before or after publication, the article may be retracted. This includes both verbatim copying and self-plagiarism (recycling previously published work without proper citation). - Data Fabrication or Falsification
Articles may be retracted if it is found that data has been fabricated, manipulated, or falsified, compromising the scientific validity and reliability of the study. - Major Errors or Methodological Flaws
If an article is found to contain substantial methodological flaws or errors that significantly undermine its conclusions and the integrity of the research, it may be retracted. This includes errors in statistical analysis, sampling techniques, or data collection processes that are irreparable. - Ethical Violations
If the research violates ethical guidelines, such as failure to obtain proper ethical approval, lack of informed consent from participants, or failure to disclose conflicts of interest, retraction may be necessary. - Duplicate or Redundant Publication
If it is found that the article has been published in multiple journals without proper citation or permission, the article will be retracted. This includes situations where the same data or findings are presented as new or original without proper acknowledgment. - Legal Issues
If the article violates copyright laws, intellectual property rights, or contains defamatory content, it will be retracted to protect the rights of the authors, journal, and other parties involved.
Retraction Procedur
The retraction process is initiated in the following manner:
- Identification of the Issue
Retraction may be triggered by the journal’s editorial team, a reader, or the authors themselves if an issue related to plagiarism, errors, or ethical concerns is identified. - Investigation
Once an issue is identified, the editorial team will conduct a thorough investigation. If necessary, external experts or reviewers will be consulted to assess the validity of the claims. The authors of the article will also be given an opportunity to respond to any concerns raised. - Decision and Notification
After reviewing all evidence and receiving feedback from the authors, the editorial team will make a decision on whether retraction is necessary. If the decision is to retract the article, a retraction notice will be published on the journal’s website. The retraction notice will: - Identify the article: Provide the full citation of the retracted article.
- State the reason for the retraction (e.g., plagiarism, data fabrication).
- Clarify whether the retraction was initiated by the authors or the editorial board.
- Link to the original article, which will be clearly marked as retracted to maintain transparency.
- Notification of Relevant Parties
If the retraction involves plagiarism, data issues, or ethical violations, the author’s affiliated institution or funding agency may be notified. This is to ensure accountability and maintain transparency within the academic community.
Post-Retraction Actions
- Correction or Clarification
In some cases, instead of full retraction, a correction or clarification may be issued if the issues identified can be addressed without invalidating the article’s findings. The correction will be published as a separate notice and linked to the original article. - Preservation of the Record
All retracted articles will remain accessible online to preserve the academic record. However, the retracted article will be clearly marked as such, and the retraction notice will be prominently displayed. This ensures transparency and provides a clear record of the retraction for readers and researchers.
Appeals Process
If an author disagrees with the decision to retract their article, they have the right to appeal the decision. The appeal should be submitted in writing and should include:
- A detailed explanation of the author’s position.
- Any supporting evidence or documentation that could alter the decision.
The editorial board will carefully review the appeal, and if necessary, an independent external reviewer may be consulted. The decision regarding the appeal will be communicated to the author, and if warranted, the retraction decision may be reconsidered.
Transparency and Ethics
The Journal of Gender Justice, Sexuality, and Health upholds the principles of academic transparency and ethical publishing throughout the retraction process. We strive to maintain the trust of our readers, authors, and the academic community by handling retractions in a fair, objective, and ethical manner.
The journal follows the guidelines set forth by COPE to ensure that all decisions regarding retraction are made with careful consideration of ethical standards and scholarly integrity.
